For those of you who prefer to fly to your vacation destinations, or you who go back year after year to a favorite locale, or the ones who just haven't yet developed a taste for a road tip or the scenic route, please do yourself a favor and get in the car!!! You have no idea what you are missing.
We started this morning in Missoula, Montana with a stop at our new friend Safeway for great prices on fresh groceries and discounted gas, with no real plan other than to head to Washington. We have our new mission which will take us to the San Juan Islands by ferry north of Seattle thanks to Jane Andrews and Becky Lavy (details will be shared in tomorrow's blog). We decided we will not head directly there but instead take time to visit Mt Rainier National Park; remember we bought a pass and need to make use of it. We didn't know how far we'd go or where we'd camp but were just enjoying the drive and sunshine, plus we were gifted with an additional hour in our day because we have now crossed into our third time zone.
The 60 miles across northern Idaho was fabulous - lots of vegetation, big blue lake, roads than wound up and down. Next we moved into Washington. Now I assumed this state was filled with trees and forestland. It started with wheat fields that shined like gold, followed by hilly farmland of green crops, then something that looked like desert landscape, then black rocky dry hills, and then came the Cascade Mountains that started like rocks and magically turned to forested green. It was an amazing transition of land. We ended up traveling 471 miles today because we just wanted to see what came next and we made it all the way to Mount Rainier National Park and are camped for the night under evergreens that are stories tall. As we drove up, we turned a corner in the road and all of the sudden there was Mt Rainier! Like I said, you just have no idea what is out there waiting for you.

Stats:
471 miles
Gas $111.70
Groceries and ice $56.52
Camping $15
